I am proud to say Wendy was a life long friend. We also served in the Navy during the early sixties, albeit at different duty stations. However, our paths crossed in 1962 when his ship made port at the Naval Air Station North Island where I was stationed. He would only be there for two days so we decided to go ashore in San Diego and 'make a night' of it.  And believe me, no one was better at 'making a night' of it than Wendy (or "Webster") as we called him back then. As our evening ended, I convinced him to stay in my barracks rather than taking a chance of going back to his ship where they frowned upon tipsy sailors coming aboard.

While he only stayed in my barracks one night and one morning, by the time he left, he knew more people in that barracks than I did.

And that didn't surprise me. One bit.
