Obituary for Mary Christena Sorgdrager (Gravenish)

Mary C. Sorgdrager, 93, of Le Mars, passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 30, 2017 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home. The family will be present at 5:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 5:00 p.m. and a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will resume at 9:30 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Mary Christena Sorgdrager was born on April 15, 1924 on the family farm near Meriden, Iowa, the daughter of Matt and Margaret (Mullenberg) Gravenish. She attended grade school near her home and later graduated from Meriden High School in 1942. Following school, Mary moved to the Seney and Le Mars, Iowa area and worked at a clothing factory in Le Mars.

On December 23, 1947, Mary and Warren Alvin Sorgdrager were united in marriage at the Maryhill Catholic Church Rectory near Cherokee, Iowa. The couple made their home on a farm one mile north of Craig, Iowa. Together they farmed and raised their four daughters. Mary and Warren retired in 1995 and moved into Craig.

Mary was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Struble, Iowa. Mary had a green thumb and enjoyed flower gardening. She was a loving mother and enjoyed following her children’s and grandchildren’s lives.

Grateful to have shared her life are her daughters, Linda and Dennis Lubben of Le Mars, IA, Connie Sorgdrager & Joanne of San Diego, CA, and Susan and Mark Miller of Sioux Center, IA; grandchildren, Julie and Doug Bundy of Akron, IA, Lori and Roger Neyens of Le Mars, IA, Alan and Kara Miller of Sioux Center, IA and Adam and Amber Miller of Sioux Falls, SD; great-grandchildren, Brandon Neyens, Ashley Neyens, Quinn Warren Bundy, Autumn Bundy, Tulley Miller, Bliss Miller, Nova Miller, Kenlee Miller and Kowen Miller; along with several nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Warren; daughter, Mary; three infant sons, Earl, James and Robert; four sisters and six brothers.
