Obituary for Dorothy Rose Crowley (Vernon)

Dorothy R. Crowley, 90, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will resume at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Dorothy Rose Crowley was born on October 4, 1927 in Le Mars, Iowa to Maurice and Rose (Louschen) Vernon. She attended school in Brunsville, Iowa and later graduated from Le Mars High School in 1946.

On February 14, 1947, Dorothy and Wayne “Red” Crowley were united in marriage at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, Iowa. They lived in Cherokee, Iowa for a brief time prior to moving to Le Mars. Red passed away suddenly at 39 years of age leaving Dorothy to raise their four children. When the children were a little older, Dorothy took a position at Hagen and Ihrke Optometric Clinic in Le Mars.

Dorothy was a member of All Saints Catholic Parish, St. James Church in Le Mars. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Dorothy was an accomplished cook and baker. She spent time in her flower gardens at home when she wasn’t socializing with friends. Next to her garden she fed all the neighborhood birds and squirrels. Dorothy enjoyed playing cards and gambling. She traveled to Arizona to visit family during the winters. She was very outgoing and full of energy.

Dorothy will be lovingly remembered by her four children, Tim and Diana Crowley of Casa Grande, AZ, Sue Meis, Mark and Cindi Crowley and Dan and Sue Crowley all of Le Mars, IA; grandchildren, Shane and Jenny Smit, Marc and Rachael Meis, Mollie Richter, Kari Crowley, Krista and Mike Kelly, Jamie and T.J. Feldhacker, Mallory Reiter and Dillon Crowley; 14 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wayne; a sister, Maxine Mayfield; and a brother, Phil Vernon.
