Obituary for Marie Sylvia Singer (Luken)

Marie S. Singer, 97, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Friday, October 27, 2017 at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at All Saints Catholic Parish - St. James Church in Le Mars. Father Bruce Lawler will celebrate Mass. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at St. James Church.

Marie Sylvia Luken was born on May 25, 1920 in Wynot, Nebraska to Sylvester and Margaret M. (Pruss) Luken. The family moved to Le Mars in 1924 where Sylvester and Margaret owned and operated the Luken Furniture Store and the Luken Funeral Home. Marie graduated from St. Joseph Catholic High School in 1938. Following graduation, Marie worked in the family business for one year. In 1940, Marie began her career with the telephone company in Le Mars.

On May 10, 1948, Marie and Marvin Singer were united in marriage at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. Marvin passed away in 1973. Marie continued working at the telephone company and retired in 1984 following 44 years of service.


During her retirement years, Marie was very active in community projects. An active member of St. James Catholic Church, Marie was a member of Altar Society, ushered at many funerals and sang in the church choir. She was also an active supporter of the Queen of Peace Shrine in Sioux City, Iowa. Marie was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and the Gehlen Endowment Committee. Marie was also an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan, bingo player and enjoyed trips to the casino.

She will be lovingly remembered by close family friends, Ken and Mary Ann Kunkel of Le Mars, IA and their children, Dena and Jeff Marienau of Le Mars, IA and their children Kelsey, Morgan, Payton and Trent, and granddaughter, Avery; Keri and Al Pick of Scottsdale, AZ and their child, Madison; Tami and Mick Langel of Le Mars, IA and their children, Alec, Katelyn, Rachel, Leah and Aden.

She was preceded in death by her father, Sylvester in 1977 and her mother, Margaret in 1994; and her husband, Marvin.
