Obituary for David Vernon Meyer

Marcus, Iowa - David V. Meyer, 67, of rural Granville, Iowa passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, December 29, 2017. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus. Rev. Kevin Roop will officiate. Burial will follow at Marcus Amherst Cemetery, Marcus. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at Earnest-Johnson Funeral Home in Marcus. The family will be present at 4:00 p.m. to greet friends. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Wednesday.

David Vernon Meyer was born on July 27, 1950 in Cherokee, Iowa, the son of Vernon and Leola (Straub) Meyer. He was baptized at Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus and later Confirmed there in 1964. David attended school in Marcus and graduated from Marcus High School in 1968. In 1969, David enlisted in the Army reserves and served until 1975.

David was united in marriage to Janet Gerstandt on February 5, 1972 at Zion United Church of Christ in Calumet, Iowa. David and Janet farmed near Granville. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and served on its Boards of Education and Trustees. He also served on the Germantown Volunteer Fire Department and Weather Watchers, the First Cooperative Board and the Western Cherokee Mutual Insurance Board (2004-2017).

In his younger years, David enjoyed coon hunting with his dog, Ben. More recently he enjoyed coffee at the elevator and was an avid John Deere Farm Toy Collector. David’s life revolved around the farm, and he loved every aspect of it. He enjoyed spending time with his wife. Together, Dave and Jan loved spending time with their grandchildren and supporting them in all their activities.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Janet of Granville, IA; a son, Mike Meyer and his wife Becky and their children, Colton and Makenzie of Paullina, IA; a daughter, Janelle Lourens and her husband, Chad and their son, Christopher of Sioux City, IA; and his father, Vernon Meyer of Paullina, IA.

David was preceded in death by his mother, Leola; and sister, Laurie Tuttle.
