Obituary for Sharon "Kay" Thill (Hatfield)

Kay Thill, 76, of Merrill, passed away surrounded by her family on Sunday, February 25, 2018 at Bickford Memory Care in Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at the Merrill First United Methodist Church. Rev. Merrill Muller will officiate. Burial will follow at a later date. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Wednesday.

Sharon Kay Thill was born on March 3, 1941 in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Donald and Ardyce (Fraser) Hatfield. She attended and graduated from Central High School in Sioux City. After graduation, Kay took a position in the Pathology Department at St. Luke’s Hospital in Sioux City.

On January 15, 1960, Kay and Roger Thill were united in marriage in Sioux City. They lived in Sioux City and Omaha prior to settling in Merrill, Iowa. Together they owned and operated Rog and Kay’s Lounge. Roger passed away on June 1, 1996.

Kay was an active member of the Merrill First United Methodist Church. She served as its treasurer and belonged to the United Methodist Women. She was elected the first woman council member for the City of Merrill. She enjoyed crafts, quilting and Plastic Canvas. She will be remembered by her friends as a caring person who looked out for others in need.

Grateful to have shared her life is her daughter, Laurie (Bob) DeWit of Jewell, Iowa, and their family, Chris and Melissa Anthony, and children, Shelby, Tyler and Hailey; Chad and Maggie Anthony, and children, Trevin and Ava; Kelli and Brian Friest and children, Weston and Beau; Kyle DeWit and Nathan DeWit; her daughter, Deb (Chad) Porter of Sioux City, Iowa, and their family, David and Makia Hoch, and daughter, Amorie,; Dylan Hoch and his daughter, Lailynn; Dain Hoch; her son, Randy Thill of Merrill, Iowa; and her beloved dog, Skittles.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roger; and a brother, Don Hatfield.
