Obituary for Jean Dorothy Niehus (Kunkel)

Jean D. Niehus, 92, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at Floyd Valley Healthcare in Le Mars. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 9, 2018 at All Saints Catholic Parish – St. Joseph Church in Le Mars. Father Bruce Lawler will celebrate Mass. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 8, 2018 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. There will be a Rosary at 5:00 p.m. with a Scriptural Prayer Service at 6:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to Mass on Monday. Jean Dorothy Niehus was born on June 9, 1925 on the Kunkel family farm near Oyens, Iowa to Andrew and Rose (Ruppert) Kunkel. She attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Le Mars, Iowa. After high school, Jean furthered her education by attending National Business School in Sioux City, Iowa. Her first secretarial position was with the Warrior Hotel in Sioux City.

Jean met Ralph Niehus on a Sunday after church in Oyens. They were later wed at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church on May 24, 1949. Jean and Ralph made their home on a farm near Oyens. She worked part time for her brother, Don, as a bookkeeper at Mount Drug in Le Mars. On the farm she enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening along with canning. Jean and Ralph moved to Le Mars in 1988. Jean was always on the go with her card clubs and coffee groups. Weekly trips with Ralph were made to Sloan to play the slots, and she also enjoyed working crossword puzzles.

Grateful to have shared her life is her husband of 68 years, Ralph Niehus of Le Mars, IA; five children and their spouses, Chuck and Dora Niehus of Lyons, CO, Dale and Linda Niehus of Overland Park, KS, Randy and Linda Niehus of Le Mars, IA, Jane and Kevin VanWyhe of Farmington, AR, and Curt and Rochelle Niehus of Le Mars, IA; grandchildren, Candi and Bill Steel, Darin and Jami Gleason, Derek and Erin Niehus, Kristin and Raj Desai, Shaun Niehus, Kyle and Kari Niehus, Brett Niehus and Kenzie Lang, Tyler Niehus and Haley Stinton, Kelly Niehus, Cory Niehus and Socorra Rol, Andrew VanWyhe and Angie Maresh, Caleb VanWyhe; Chad and Hilary Niehus, Andrea and Jeremy Langel and Caitlyn Niehus; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Norma, Delores, Rosemary and Paula; brothers, Donald and Larry; and an infant brother, Andrew.
