Mary Kathleen Lane was born on August 31, 1928 in Struble, Iowa, the daughter of Raymond and Pauline (Gysbertsen) Hauser. She was raised in the Struble area where she began her education and penchant for hard work, later graduating from Le Mars High School in 1946. Following high school, Mary worked as a film developer. She met Charles E. Lane in Le Mars, on a blind date, arranged by Betty and Earle Smith.

Mary and Charles E. Lane were united in marriage on June 1, 1948 in the rectory of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Struble, Iowa. Their vows were renewed in the beautiful Struble church for their 50th wedding anniversary in 1998.The couple made their home in Sioux City, where they welcomed Kristin Rae in 1954. They later moved to Chicago, then Glen Oaks, NY. In 1958 they purchased their home at 4 Paula Street in East Northport, NY, and in that same year Julia Ann was born.

Mary first stayed at home with her girls, but was involved in the P.T.A. and Girl Scouts, acting as a troop leader for many years. Having been an accomplished seamstress since the age of 10, Mary created almost all of Kristin and Julia’s clothes through their school years and beyond.

She took a position in the Cedar Road Elementary School as a clerical assistant, and later managed the Fabrics Plus fabric store in Commack, NY. A remarkably talented lady, Mary fashioned most of her own clothes throughout her life, and even made drapes, slipcovers, pillows and wedding gowns. She enjoyed traveling all over the world with Charles, accompanying him to Bethpage Federal Credit Union conferences.

After retiring and returning home to Iowa, Mary was a member of St. Joseph’s church in Struble. She was active in the American Legion Auxiliary and the Floyd Valley Hospital Auxiliary. She volunteered her time at the Plymouth County Museum and Plymouth Manor Care Center, both in Le Mars. When Mary wasn’t volunteering she was still sewing.

She is survived by her daughters, Kristin Rae Lane of Le Mars, IA and Julia Ann Lane and her husband Edward Sheehan, Jr. of Islip, NY; a granddaughter, Kylie Paige Forbes of Chandler, AZ.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles, on November 16, 2002; a brother, Jim Hauser, in 1982.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Struble or to the charity of choice.
