Marcus, Iowa- Lucille Ott, 96, of Marcus, Iowa passed away on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at the Heartland Care Center in Marcus, Iowa. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 2, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Marcus, Iowa. Rev. Don Meyer and Rev. Robert Meyer will officiate. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Cherokee, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2009 at the Earnest – Johnson Funeral Home in Marcus. The family will be present from 2-6 p.m. with a prayer service scheduled for 4:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral on Monday.
Lucille Corl Ott was born on May 7, 1913 on the family farm near Rolfe, Iowa, the daughter of David and Elizabeth (Fisher) Piepgras. She was baptized in the summer of 1913 at the Presbyterian Church in Rolfe. The family moved to Lake Crystal, Minnesota where Lucille graduated from high school in 1929. She also attended business school in Mankato, Minnesota. Following her education, Lucille worked for a family as a nanny and housekeeper, and an attorney.
On September 28, 1935 Lucille and Carl Ott were united in marriage in Madelia, Minnesota. Lucille was confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen, Iowa on February 2, 1936. They made their home on a farm south of Marcus, Iowa. In 1944 the couple relocated to a farm south of Cleghorn, Iowa and would farm and raise their family there until moving into Cleghorn in 1965. In 1957 Lucille went to work at the state mental hospital in Cherokee, Iowa, a position she held for 23 years. Carl passed away on November 7, 1970. Lucille remained in Cleghorn until moving to Cherokee in 1994. She has been a resident at Heartland Care Center in Marcus, Iowa for the last four years.
Lucille was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Marcus. She was a past president of the Ladies Aid and taught Sunday School. Lucille loved quilting and was an avid reader and bird watcher. While living on the farm Lucille had a large vegetable garden and did a great deal of canning and baking. Her door was always open for coffee and visiting with family and neighbors. She also boarded single teachers in her home.
She is lovingly remembered by her children Judy and Rev. Robert Meyer of Seattle, WA, Richard and Jeannette Ott of Cleghorn, IA, Margaret Gianopoulos of Henderson, NV, Marion Ott of Alexandria, VA, and Laurie and Max Wolf of Owasso, Oklahoma; Grandchildren Elizabeth and David Meyer, Kevin, Susan and Sandra Ott, Mark, Yvonne, and Christina Gianopoulos, and Nick Wolf, 17 great-grandchildren; sisters Ruth Pouliet of Winter Haven, FL and Helen Mather of Madelia, MN.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 35 years, Carl; grandchildren Lynn Eugene Ott and Bradley Ryan Wolf; sisters Irene, Viola, Vivian and Frances; and a brother John.
