Obituary for John Leroy Britton

John Leroy Britton
Le Mars, Iowa – John Britton, 63, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, November 28, 2013 at Unity Point -St. Luke’s Health Systems in Sioux City, Iowa. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Le Mars, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 2 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with teh family present from 4-7 p.m., a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 5:00 p.m. and a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the Mass on Tuesday.

John Leroy Britton was born on December 4, 1949 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Earl and Mary (Sullivan) Britton. He attended Gehlen Catholic High School, graduating in 1968. He furthered his education by earning a degree in business administration at Westmar College in Le Mars.

On April 20, 1974 John and Margaret Dull were united in marriage at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars. They made their home in Bellevue, Nebraska where John worked at the Bank of Bellevue. A year and one-half later they returned to Le Mars and John took a position selling auto parts in the area for two years. He spent seven years working at Northwest Iowa Power Cooperative (NIPCO) before beginning his career in the insurance field. John represented American Family Insurance for 21 years, until joining with AmBank Insurance eight years ago.

John was an active member of St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars where he ushered, had served on the finance committee and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He began his involvement with Le Mars Little League in 1975 as a coach and later became a board member. In 1991, John took over as board president and currently held that position. He was one of the original individuals who formed the slow pitch softball league. Later John joined a group of men who helped transform the same location to what is the Gehlen Catholic baseball field. Along with serving on the Gehlen Catholic School Board, John served as president of the Gehlen Jay Club. His tireless efforts in the Le Mars community earned him the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award in 1998.

When John wasn’t volunteering his time at church, and in the community, he enjoyed restoring cars, gas pumps, pedal cars and automobile memorabilia. He could often be found “tinkering” in the garage with his sons and friends. He kept his yard in perfect shape and liked working on his rental properties. He took daily drives to “check on Le Mars” and read the newspapers from front to back every day. Time watching sports were dedicated to his children's events, Yankees, Packers and Hawkeyes. While doing all of this, he always included his family and friends in his activities.
John was a selfless man, putting family and the community first. As much dedication as he had to the LeMars community, he was even more devoted to his wife and children. John was a man of true character and integrity that will live on through his family.

John will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Margaret of Le Mars, IA; children Jamie (Mark Washington) Britton of Lee’s Summit, MO, Katie (Lance) Goulding of Kansas City, MO, William (Valen) Britton of Kennesaw, GA, Sara Britton of Kansas City, MO, Thomas “T.J.” Britton of Le Mars, IA; his mother, Mary Britton of Le Mars, IA; siblings, Linda DeLair of Le Mars, IA, Mark (Michelle) Britton of Le Mars, IA, Merle Britton of San Angelo, TX, Kay (Chuck) Kellen of Le Mars, IA, Sue (Mike) Nash of Omaha, NE; mother-in-law, Bonnie Dull of Le Mars, IA, sisters and brothers-in-law, Paula (Joe) Niemann of Higdon, AR, Anne Dull of Hilton Head, SC, Lynn (special friend Donald Lester) Dull of San Diego, CA, Mark (special friend Tamie Treiber) Dull of Hills, IA, Beverly Burik of Marietta, GA, Bill Dull of Marietta, GA, Dan (Lynn) Dull of Marietta, GA, Don (Teresa) Dull of Acworth, GA; and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews (he treated as his grandchildren).
