Obituary for Rex Louis Weinreich

Rex Louis  Weinreich
Rex L. Weinreich, 91, of Kingsley, Iowa passed away on Friday, June 10, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Kingsley. Father Bradley C. Pelzel will celebrate Mass. Burial will follow at St. Michael Catholic Cemetery in Kingsley. Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at the Johnson – Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley. The family will be present from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. A Knights of Columbus Rosary will begin at 5:30 p.m. and a Scriptural Prayer Service will take place at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to Mass on Wednesday.

Rex Louis Weinreich was born on November 14, 1924 in his parent’s home, Clarence and Florence (Manker) Weinreich, in rural Pierson, Iowa. He had three brothers, Dean, Wayne and Donald and a sister Evelyn. Rex attended country school and high school in Pierson where he enjoyed playing basketball. He graduated in 1942, and then engaged in farming with his father for five years.

On November 3, 1948, Rex and Geraldine Mary Dugan were united in marriage at St. Michael Catholic Church in Kingsley. The couple made their home near Kingsley on Gerry’s maternal grandfather’s farm. Together they raised Black Angus cattle along with grain farming.

Rex was an active member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Kingsley where he was appointed the first Lector and Eucharistic Minister and served as a trustee for many years. He was a member of the Kingsley Knights of Columbus, had served as Grand Knight, and was a 4th Degree Knight. He also served on the St. Michael Centennial Board and the Kingsley Centennial Committee. Rex’s family was chosen as family of the year many times by the Knights of Columbus. He served as counselor for CCD social activities.

His hobbies included bowling, golf, square dancing, computer club, card club, watching the History Channel and serving his home owners association in Mesa, Arizona for many years where he enjoyed many new friends and was always willing to lend a hand when needed. Rex was chosen by Professor Herb Keuhne of Briar Cliff College for a comparative analysis between farmers in the US and also in developing countries. He as an active supporter of St. Vincent De Paul Society, Sunshine Acres and the Boys’ Club all of Mesa, Arizona. Rex and Gerry were instrumental in initiating many fun and interesting activities and programs when they were in Mesa.

Rex is survived by his wife Gerry and the five children they were blessed with, Mark and Nancy Weinreich of River Falls, WI, Marilynn Weinreich of Scottsdale, AZ, Colette and Hugh Stowe of The Woodlands, TX, Michelle Weinreich of Ames, IA and Dr. Dana and Denise Weinreich of Fountain Hills, AZ; five grandchildren, Andrea, Lisa, Kim, Derek and Devon; four great-grandchildren, Dominick, Gabriel, Lennen and Maggie Mae; a sister, Evelyn Berglund of Marcus, IA; a brother, Donald and Darlis Weinreich of Centennial, CO; two sisters-in-law, Dale Weinreich of Buena Park, CA and Shirley Weinreich of San Diego, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Dean and Wayne; two brothers-in-law, Arnold Berglund and James Dugan; a sister-in-law, Madonna Dugan.
