Martha Johanna Vander Tuig was born on July 3, 1921, in Sioux County, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Frances (Meyer) Janssen. She was raised near Le Mars, Iowa where her grandfather, Rev. J.D. Meyer, was pastor of Christ Lutheran Church. Martha was Baptized on July 17, 1921 and Confirmed on April 14, 1935. She graduated from Ireton High School in 1938. Martha furthered her education at Western Union (Westmar) College in Le Mars and earned a teaching certificate. She later taught in rural schools in Sioux County and Seney Elementary.

Martha and George F. Vander Tuig were united in marriage on December 28, 1944 at Christ Lutheran Church while George was on Survivor’s Leave from the US Navy during WWII. The couple lived in several places that included San Diego, Boston, Newport News, Virginia and the Great Lakes area, before settling in Le Mars in 1953. George opened Clear Vue Television where, in later years, Martha did the bookkeeping. At that time they joined St. John’s Lutheran Church where Martha’s parents were members. Martha taught Sunday School, Bible School and Catechism classes. She was a faithful worker at church and member of her circle and Bible Study. She served on Altar Guild for many years. She was also active in her community and in all of the activities of their children.

During their retirement years, Martha and George spent their winters in Green Valley, Arizona. George passed away on February 13, 2007. Martha became a resident at Brentwood Good Samaritan Village in Le Mars in 2012. Her family is grateful for the wonderful care given by her pastors, Brentwood and Hospice of Siouxland.
