Obituary for Evelyn Mae Woll (Tooker)

Evelyn M. Woll, 91, of Merrill, Iowa passed away on Friday, March 23, 2018 at Holy Spirit Retirement Home in Sioux City, Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ellendale, Iowa. Father Bruce Lawler will celebrate Mass. Burial will follow at the parish cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 26, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Catholic, Ellendale. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will resume at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the church prior to Mass.

Evelyn Mae Tooker was born on August 8, 1926, near Merrill, Iowa, the daughter of Harold and Leona (Marx) Tooker. She attended and graduated from Liberty High School, rural Merrill, in 1944. While in high school, Evelyn enjoyed performing in school plays and playing basketball.

On August 8, 1944, Evelyn and Walter “Buck” Pratt were married. Together they had three children. Evelyn and Walter made their home on a farm west of Merrill and later moved to Sioux City, Iowa. Evelyn worked at Wags Hut, Wags Warf and Tollers’ Restaurants. She also worked as a receptionist at Dr. R.S. Farren’s office.

On February 16, 1968, Evelyn and Leo E. Woll were united in marriage. Lee added three children to the marriage. They farmed three miles west of Merrill prior to moving to a farm east of Akron, Iowa in 1973. They later retired from farming and moved to a home west of Merrill and then to the Woll homeplace on the corner of K-22 and C-38, rural Merrill.

Evelyn was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ellendale. She was instrumental in forming the group that makes Ellendale’s famous apple pies. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, knitting, crafts, baking and spending time with her grandchildren. She made the best fried chicken, cinnamon rolls and apple pies. Her family will miss the big holiday meals Evelyn provided.

She will be lovingly remembered by her five children, Walter and Cheryl Pratt of Ocala, FL, Julie and Craig Bergquist of Merrill Iowa, Alan and Marcia Pratt of Le Mars, IA, Dennis and Mona Woll of Albuquerque, NM and Denise and Rick Akland of Beresford, SD; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great grandchildren; a sister, Frances and Darrell Pranke of Sioux City, IA; and a brother, Harold Tooker, Jr. of Merrill, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leo Woll on April 30, 2009; a son, Mick Woll; two grandsons, Clint Bergquist and Michael Woll, Jr.; a brother, Harvey Tooker; sister, Bonnie DeRocher; sister-in-law, Carol Tooker; brother-in-law, Bob DeRocher.
