Obituary for Phyllis L. Monroe (Hanson)

Phyllis L.  Monroe (Hanson)
Phyllis Monroe, 79, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull, Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at All Saints Catholic Parish- St. James Church in Le Mars. Father Matthew Solyntjes, Father Paul Eisele and Deacon Paul Gengler will concelebrate Mass. Burial will take place at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a Rosary at 5:00 p.m. and a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Wednesday.

Phyllis was born February 10, 1939 and raised in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Glenn & Kundie (Heinzen) Hanson, where she graduated from Heelan High School in 1957.

Phyllis and Cliff Monroe were united in marriage on February 27, 1960. They lived in Sioux City, Iowa, South Sioux City, Nebraska, and Monterey Park, California, before making their home in Le Mars, Iowa in 1967. They are the parents of two children, Barbara Ann and Brian Andrew.

Phyllis was employed in numerous jobs including Sweet Sixteen Bowling Lanes, the Club Cafe and Mercy Health. She attended Iowa Lakes Community College and received a degree in Addiction Counseling and Business Management. She was employed at Marian Health Center in Sioux City, Iowa, as a certified Addiction Counselor.

Phyllis and Cliff joined the “Compassionate Friends” in Sioux City, Iowa, following the loss of their daughter Barbara, who passed away in 1998.

Phyllis readily volunteered wherever needed or asked to, including the Genealogy Society, Plymouth County Census, the Mops Program at the Bible Church, Hospice, Meals on Wheels, and Siouxland Council on Sexual and Domestic Abuse. She attended St. James Catholic Church, leading the rosary before church and taking communion to the home-bound and nursing homes. Phyllis loved to bake, sharing brownies and cakes for family and friends and the kids at the Asylum in Le Mars.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Cliff, her son Brian, his wife Jill of Clemmons, North Carolina, and grandchildren Ali and her husband Will Johnson, Christian Monroe, Mindy Farmer and her husband, Joshua and their children, Kyle, Josh and Lylli, Amanda Hansen and her child Tyra, Jason Hansen and his wife Sheri, and their children Cayson and Ryan, a sister Norma Morris and her husband Bob, brothers-in-law Don Hawkins, and Dean Flynn, and sisters-in-law Gerry Monroe and Janice Monroe.
