Obituary for Joyce Elaine Nervig (Downing)

Joyce Nervig, 87, of Marcus, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at Heartland Care Center in Marcus. Funeral services will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus. Rev. Chris Childs will officiate. Burial will follow at Marcus Amherst Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at Grace United Methodist Church. The family will be present at 11:30 a.m. to greet friends.

Joyce Elaine Downing was born on June 4, 1931 in Le Mars, Iowa, the daughter of Elmer and Frieda (Tanner) Downing. She attended school in Le Mars and graduated from Le Mars High School in 1949. After receiving her diploma, Joyce took a position with JC Penney in Le Mars.

On January 24, 1954, Joyce and Stanley Orlan Nervig were united in marriage at Le Mars. They made their longtime home in Marcus, Iowa where they raised their three daughters. Joyce took great pride in being home with, and providing for, her family.

Joyce was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus where she participated in activities with the United Methodist Women. She also volunteered with the Heartland Care Center Auxiliary and belonged to various card groups. Their last 20 years of her married life were spent with Stanley wintering in Mesa, Arizona at VDO. She moved to Heartland Care Center in November of 2017.

Grateful to have shared her life is her daughters, Barbara and Mike Knutson of Marcus, IA, Beverly and Jim Shirbroun of Sioux City, IA and Marilyn Whitney of Urbandale, IA; grandchildren, Alison and Barrett Toland of Woodbury, MN, Mark and Jenny Shirbroun of Des Moines, IA, Greg Shirbroun of St. Paul, MN, David Shirbroun of Washington, DC, Lauren and AJ Wilcox of Johnston, IA, Amanda and Tyler Smith of Johnston, IA, Mikayla Whitney of Grimes, IA and Samantha and Nate Hibbs of Johnston, IA; 9 great-grandchildren, sisters, Dorothy Trobaugh of Sioux City, IA, Virginia Brangwin of Le Mars, IA and Evelyn Kallsen of Le Mars, IA; a sister-in-law, Joyce Nervig of Humboldt, IA and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Stanley on October 1, 2015; a sister and her husband, Betty and Carl Ahrendt; and brothers-in-law, Ed Nervig, John Trobaugh, John Brangwin and Lloyd Kallsen.
