Obituary

Marian Frances Baker, 97, of Le Mars, Iowa, formerly of Merrill, Iowa, passed away on Friday, December 21, 2018 at the Brentwood Good Samaritan Village in Le Mars. Funeral services will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at St. John Lutheran Church in Merrill. Pastor Elizabeth Lippke will officiate. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Merrill. Visitation with the family present will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday at St. John Lutheran Church.

Marian Frances Marienau was born on May 6, 1921 on a farm northwest of Merrill, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Caroline (Mattas) Marienau. She attended school in Merrill through the 10th grade prior to transferring to Le Mars to graduate from high school in 1940. Marian furthered her education by attending Normal Training at Western Union (Westmar) College in Le Mars. She taught in rural schools in Plymouth County for the next 17 years.

On October 31, 1942, Marian and Francis E. “Ike” Baker were united in marriage in South Sioux City, Nebraska. They made their home in Merrill. After teaching school, Marian took a position as a teller with Farmer’s State Bank in Merrill. She worked as a teller for 21 years and then retired in 1982. Ike passed away on November 30, 2000.

Marian was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Merrill. She taught Sunday School, participated in Circle and sang in the choir. Marian moved to Sunrise Villa in Le Mars in 2008. She loved time with friends and family, vacationing, always staying active, and of course, her cardinals.

She will be lovingly remembered by her sisters, Norma (Virgil) Vanderloo of Waterloo, IA and Waneta Tevis of Seattle, WA; a sister-in-law, Margaret Marienau of Merrill, IA; brother-in-law, Richard Stroup of Apache Junction, AZ; along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Carrie Marienau; husband, Ike; brothers, Melvin (Elsie), Edward (Shirley) and Frank Marienau; her sisters, Dorothy Marienau, Carol Stroup and Wilma (Merton) Jessen.

Mrs. Baker was my teacher, K-6. What an amazing teacher and person. The impact she had on my life during those years have become life-long treasures as she was so much more than just a teacher. I have passed on to my grandkids memories of my grade school teacher and that one room school house. What a treasure to have these precious memories from an era gone by. How she did it is beyond me. Most of my other teachers could barely handle one subject, she handled all the subjects, all the age groups and did it well. I tried so hard to do things right-handed because everyone else wrote with their right hand and she encouraged me by letting me know that it was ok to be left-handed. In a nutshell, she was one of the impact players in my life.

Family and friends of Marian Baker. I attended Stanton Township Country School with a one of a kind teacher. Marian was every bit just that. I think back often to those 6 years with her and marvel to this day how she controlled that variety of grades. Beyond that, we all learned. With 6 distinctly different course curricula and age groups, Ms. Baker handled those tasks with relative ease. I remain in awe at Marian’s ability to keep us all interested and focused back in those days. And we had fun too. Some years back I stopped by her house in Merrill just to spend some time with her and to thank her for what she meant and did for a bunch of farm kids. In terms of an impact and unselfish dedication to others, Marian Baker is on a list all her own. Roger Schultz
