A Celebration of Doug’s Life will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Rev. Chris Meier will officiate. Burial will take place 2:30 p.m. at Arlington Township Cemetery in Moville, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 3, 2019 at St. John’s Lutheran Church. The family will be present from 6-8 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the service on Saturday. The Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars is assisting Doug’s family with arrangements.

Douglas Scott Martin was born on March 11, 1967 in Wakefield, Nebraska to Roy and Lois (Corey) Martin. He attended elementary and high school at Woodbury Central in Moville, Iowa, graduating in 1985. During those years Doug always kept active with Boy Scouts and 4-H. Following high school, Doug continued his education at Morningside College in Sioux City and Wayne State College at Wayne, Nebraska. He first used his degree in education at South O’Brien High School where he put his love for the sciences to work. He later taught in Mapleton before moving to Le Mars. Doug earned several Masters’ Degrees that enabled him to teach college level classes at Le Mars Community along with classes at Western Iowa Tech Community College and Briar Cliff University in Sioux City.

Doug’s passion for teaching and his students was evident by the groups he led and awards they earned. His 20 years of work with the Space Settlement Design Contest and NASA not only took him and the students to Houston, Texas where Doug served as a keynote speaker at the international gathering but also to Delhi, India where he participated as a CEO in the 13th Annual Asian Regional Semi-Final International Space Settlement Design Competition. Also close to his heart was his involvement with the Geared Up robotics club which has earned multiple achievements over the years.

He was also a member of the Iowa State Education Association on the local, state and national level. He served on the board of the Iowa State Extension and, in his limited spare time, Doug enjoyed gardening.

Grateful to have shared his life is his mother, Lois Kloewer and her husband, Harold of Moville, IA; three brothers and their wives, Irv and Kelly Martin of Moville, IA, Matt and Tami Martin of Missouri Valley, IA and Jon and Maria Martin of Omaha, NE; sisters, Michelle Stovie and Melissa Cavalieri and her husband, Chris both of Papillion, NE; along with nieces and nephews, Jessica, Jordan, Ashley, Jacob, Anna and Abby.

He was preceded in death by his father, Roy in 1987; sisters, LeAnn Luck and Lori Martin; and his grandparents.

Memorials in Doug’s name may be directed to the Geared Up Robotics Club at Le Mars Community High School.

Dear Doug's family,
I am Jack Gafford and met Doug through the Space Settlement Design Competition that he volunteered for over many of the last 20 years. Doug was a very dear friend and I was blessed to know him and have the opportunity to travel with him to India and volunteer with him over all of these years.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend his service. I would very much like to offer my contact information if any of you, Doug's family, would like to contact me so I can offer my deepest sympathies and offer stories. I can be reached at 832 425-7899 or at

Thank you for having such a great son, brother and all around exceptionally good person as part of your family,

Jack Gafford

A man of humility, humor, and honor. A man of curiosity, compassion, courage, and kindness. Sparking the imagination of his students, a passionate advocate for our profession, loyal and caring in friendship. "Living the dream" -- what a legacy, Doug! My deepest condolences to family, friends, and the countless students and colleagues whose lives he shaped and influenced. Doug will be deeply missed in the classroom and on our Iowa State Education Association (ISEA) Executive Board.

To say Doug died too young goes without saying. He did, but not before he had the opportunity to positively impact thousands of students, hundreds of teachers, and the profession he loved. He was an inspiration and a friend. He will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace. He has earned his angel wings.

I had Mr. Martin my junior and senior year of high school. I will never forget walking the halls, and him saying, “There goes Trouble”. Because of him, my love of science grew, and he always took the time aside for his students. Another memory I will never forget is whenever we would take a test in anatomy or College Anatomy, and when I would erase an answer, he would be giving me the “Mr. Martin look”, which I received a lot of. Because 90% of the time, the first answer was the correct one, and you could tell that I had erased it on the answer sheet. Mr. Martin was an amazing man, and he will never be forgotten!
