Obituary for Curtis H. Ross

Curtis H. Ross, 82, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at his home. A Celebration of Life Service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Rev. Chris Meier of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars will officiate. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home. The family will be present to greet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Visitation will resume at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

Curtis H. Ross was born on January 5, 1937 in Le Mars, Iowa to Curtis H. and Irene (Bradley) Richey. His parents divorced and Irene married E. C. “Bud” Ross, who adopted Curt. He graduated from Le Mars High School in1955. Curt enlisted in the United States Navy on August 30, 1955. He served on the submarine, USS Bream as a sonar operator and repairman. He was Honorably Discharged on July 21, 1959. Following the service, Curt attended Westmar College in Le Mars.

After college, Curt began his longtime career as a meat cutter in Sioux City, Iowa. On November 4, 1961, Curt and Mary Vogelzang were united in marriage in Golden, Colorado. Curt and Bud opened Bud’s Meats in Sioux City and operated there before moving the business to Le Mars where it was named Ross Meats. After the meat market closed, Curt sold investments and insurance as an independent agent for numerous companies.

Curt enjoyed wood working, fishing and coffee with his special coffee group. He was a member of the Le Mars Eagles Club and Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion.

Curt will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, Mary Ross of Le Mars, IA; sons, Todd Ross of Le Mars, IA and Craig Ross of Sioux Falls, SD; sisters, Roberta (Duane) Rath of Fremont, NE, Janet Welch of Kearney, NE and June (Larry) Kenton of Kearney, NE; brothers, Bill (Leslie) Ross of Cedar Rapids, IA, Bob (Jennifer) Richey of Omaha, NE and Bill Richey of Norfolk, NE; sisters-in-law, Diane Ross of San Antonio, TX, Carmen Groth of Le Mars, IA and Joyce Gronemeyer of Le Mars, IA; brother-in-law, Frank Vogelzang of Sioux City, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Curtis Richey, E.C “Bud” and Irene Ross; brothers, Scott Ross and Bradley Ross; a sister-in-law, Elinor Martin and her husband, Dennis; and a brother-in-law, Wayne Gronemeyer.
