Obituary for Virginia Rose Brangwin (Downing)

Virginia Rose Brangwin, 92, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Sunday, August 4, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Society in Le Mars. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Rev. Chris Meier will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 9, 2019 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service.

Virginia Rose Brangwin was born on January 17, 1927 in Le Mars, Iowa, the daughter of Elmer LeRoy and Frieda Otilda (Tanner) Downing. She attended Le Mars High School and graduated in 1945. After high school, Virginia worked at the J.C. Penney department store until her marriage to John E. Brangwin on February 26, 1950.

Along with raising her three children, Virginia taught Head Start from 1968 to 1988. She also volunteered at the Good Samaritan Village in Le Mars for 46 years. Virginia was a long term member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was the first woman elected to the Church Council and was chairman of the Dorcas Circle for many years. Virginia has a strong faith in God and believed in the power of prayer. She enjoyed hosting family gatherings and celebrating annual holiday traditions.

She is lovingly remembered by her children and their spouses, Larry and Lisa Brangwin of Le Mars, IA, David and Tonia Brangwin of Palm Bay, FL and Janet and Mark Skidmore of Overland Park, KS; grandchildren, Sara (Anthony) Jones, Jason Brangwin, Shaun (Heather) Brangwin, Peter (Nicole) Brangwin, Kristine (Charles) Turner, Kevin (Haley) Clayton and Kara Clayton; sisters, Evelyn Kallsen of Le Mars, IA and Dorothy Trobaugh of Le Mars, IA.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John on March 26, 2016; and two sisters, Betty Ahrendt and Joyce Nervig.
