Catherine M. Den Hartog was born on April 14, 1927 in Hospers, Iowa. She graduated from Hospers Public High School and went on to Sioux City for secretarial and bookkeeping training.

On December 5, 1947, Catherine and Marion “Mert” Den Hartog were united in marriage at the First Reformed Church in Hospers, Iowa. Together they farmed near Hospers until 1958.
The family moved to Le Mars in July of 1960. After their move to Le Mars she was employed by the Le Mars Community High School where she managed the office. She developed a mentoring relationship with many of the office girls. From there she went to work for the County Engineers office until retirement.

Catherine was a member of the Le Mars Bible Church where her preferred places of service were “behind the scenes.” She had the gift of hospitality and took great pleasure in hosting Bible studies.

She was known by most who knew her and especially her family as a woman of great faith who loved others deeply and well. She was devoted to prayer for her family, her church, and for many missionaries. Her grandkids describe her as their place in life where they felt “safe,” never offering criticism but only love and encouragement. The legacy of her extended family’s faith in the Lord Jesus Christ can be traced in large part to her as she passed down her love for her Savior and others and the baton of truth to them.

She will be lovingly remembered by a son, David Den Hartog and his wife Elizabeth of Cleburne, TX; daughter, Brenda Meredith and her husband Wayne of Madison Heights, VA; son, Don Den Hartog and his wife Patty of Winchester, VA; grandchildren, Rachel (Ryan) Mohrmann, Jonathan (Angie) Den Hartog, Joshua (Claudia) Den Hartog, Jason Den Hartog, Ruth (Rich) Oyler, Kendra (Doug) Fletcher, Reagan Williams, Christy (Jason) Currie, Brian (Kimbra) Den Hartog, Karen (Dan) Berkenkemper and Brad (Valerie) Den Hartog; 29 great-grandchildren; sister Joanne Otter, brother Gerald (Joleen) Oordt, and sister Vicky (Gary) Vander Wilt.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Mert on June 4, 2014; and brother Donald Oordt.

Memorials may be directed to the missions fund at Le Mars Bible Church, 1550 7th Ave. S.E., Le Mars, Iowa 51031.
