Obituary for Richard Ray Geerdes

Cleghorn, Iowa – Richard R. Geerdes, 51, of Cleghorn, Iowa passed away Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at this home following a brief illness with cancer. A Graveside Service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at the Marcus Amherst Cemetery, Marcus, Iowa. Rev. Don Meyer will officiate.

Richard Ray Geerdes was born on June 17, 1968 in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Richard and Diana (Lily) Geerdes. He attended high school in Lake City, Iowa and then began working in the construction field. Richard later took a position as a CNA at Heritage Acres Nursing Home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It was there that he met Beckey Evens. The couple was later married on January 19, 1989 in Independence, Iowa.

Richard and Beckey made their first home in Cedar Rapids then moved to Deloit, Iowa. Richard worked as an over-the-road truck driver for Schuster’s Trucking in Le Mars, Iowa for 5 years. In 1998, the family moved to Cleghorn, Iowa. Richard first drove for Cloverleaf then took a position with K & J Trucking where he was currently driving. He has driven in all of the 48 contiguous states and Canada.

He loved anything and everything outdoors. He focused on hunting, fishing, camping, shooting and archery. He also enjoyed raising and training German Shorthaired Pointers. Above all, spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, was most important.

Grateful to have shared his life is his wife of 30 years, Beckey Geerdes; a son and his wife, Dakota and Cristie Geerdes; a daughter, Niccole Geerdes; grandchildren, Isabella, Andrew, Reagen and Richard all of Cleghorn, Iowa; his mother, Diana Geerdes of Ida Grove, Iowa; a sister and her husband, Teresa and Michael Gommerman of Odebolt, Iowa; a sister, Michelle Geerdes of Ida Grove, IA; a brother and his wife, Scott and Dee Geerdes of Gig Harbor, WA; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard; and his son, Richard Jacob R.J. Geerdes on September 21, 2006.
