Le Mars, Iowa – Brian F. Plendl, 58, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2020 at Floyd Valley Healthcare in Le Mars following a lengthy battle with cancer. Funeral services will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Deacon Paul Gengler will officiate. Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 16, 2020 in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Rock Valley, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home. The family will be present to greet friends from 5-7 p.m.
Brian Francis Plendl was born on June 23, 1961 in Le Mars, Iowa to Kenneth and Cynthia (Schiefen) Plendl. He was raised in Le Mars and attended Le Mars Community High School. Following school, Brian enlisted in the United States Marines on August 20, 1980. He served until March 4, 1983 before returning to Le Mars.
Upon returning from the service, Brian began working road construction. He worked on road construction until taking a position at Wells’ Dairy. Brian married Sharon McGill on June 19, 1993, through this union he gained a son and special friend, Matt. He worked at Wells’ until his declining health forced him to retire in 2010. Brian was a three time cancer survivor. He was diagnosed with Leukemia in 1995, cheek cancer in 2000 and tongue cancer in 2009.
Brian was an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan and had many collectables. He also enjoyed fishing and winning at cards in his spare time. He cherished and loved his family more than anything and never failed to thank them.
He will be lovingly remembered by his mother, Cynthia Plendl of Le Mars, IA; son, Matt (Karen) McGill of Johnston, IA; sisters, Brenda (Tom) McVicker of Le Mars, IA, Beverly (Jeff) Bandstra of Chesapeake, VA, Bethene Miller (special friend, Mike Mockler) of Le Mars, IA, Betty (Kurt) Black of Le Mars, IA and Belinda (Brad) Eppling of Le Mars, IA; a brother, Bradley (Nancy) Plendl of Sioux City, IA; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Plendl in 1997; grandparents, Francis and Christine Schiefen and Harry “Bud” and Helen Plendl; former wife and special friend, Sharon McGill; and a great niece, Jaelynn Anderson.
