Obituary for Duane Arthur Zalme
Duane Arthur Zalme, 72, of Ireton, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2020 at MercyOne in Sioux City, Iowa. Due to the public health concerns, A Celebration of Life Service will be scheduled at a later date. Private family services with a burial at Hillside Cemetery in Merrill, Iowa will take place in the near future.
Duane Arthur Zalme was born on January 14, 1948 in Hawarden, Iowa to Fred and Eva (Vander Pol) Zalme. He graduated from high school in Hawarden and enlisted in the United States Army on January 24, 1968. He served as a cook until earning an Honorable Discharge on January 7, 1970. When Duane finished with the Army, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He proudly served with the Marines until receiving an Honorable Discharge on December 12, 1972.
Duane and Diane (Crippen) were united in marriage on August 6, 1977 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Merrill, Iowa. Duane began work with the Farmers Cooperative in 1976. He worked with the cooperative until 1997 when he took a position with Nemschoff Chairs. In 2001, Duane and Diane moved to Ohio. Duane worked part-time for Kroger and he worked on a full-time basis with Cornerstone Consolidated Services Group.
In August of 2007, they returned to the Ireton area. Duane worked at A & I Products in Rock Valley, Iowa prior to his retirement. Along with his other occupations, Duane worked as a baseball umpire and delivered newspapers for the Sioux City Journal. He also enjoyed taking drives with Diane. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and Los Angeles Dodgers fan.
Duane will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Diane Zalme of Ireton, IA; a son, Mark Zalme and his fiancé April Albertson of Sioux Center, IA; a daughter and her husband, Jen and Don Kirkbride of Sioux Center, IA; grandchildren, Braylin, Wrigley, Maddy and J.T.; a sister, Jeanette Wakeman of Ireton, IA; and his mother-in-law, Mary Crippen of Merrill, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Charlotte; and his father-in-law, Robert Crippen.
