Obituary for Virginia Mae Schenkelberg

Virginia Mae Schenkelberg was born on June 10, 1920 in Carroll County, Iowa, the daughter of Warren John and Stella Ordell (Snyder). She was raised and attended school in Glidden, Iowa. Following graduation, she furthered her education at the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, Iowa.

On September 6, 1942, Virginia and Al Schenkelberg were united in marriage in Carmel, California. The wedding took place just prior to Al departing overseas during WWII. Following the war, the couple settled down in Carroll, Iowa before moving to Le Mars, Iowa in 1959 where Al took over the John Deere Dealership.

Virginia Mae Schenkelberg, 99, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Saturday, May 16, 2020 at her home. A visitation with social distancing will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at All Saints Catholic Parish, St. Joseph Church in Le Mars followed by a private family Mass at 10:30 a.m. Father Matthew Solyntjes will celebrate Mass. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars.

Virginia was a member of All Saints Catholic Parish in Le Mars and was active in Catholic Daughters. She was an avid card player, enjoyed golfing and camping with her family. She and Al wintered in Arizona with friends from Le Mars. Virginia enjoyed her time with her family, visiting them in various states throughout the country. Her grandchildren grew up enjoying grandma’s fresh cinnamon rolls and a friendly game of garbage.

She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Allan Schenkelberg and his wife, Karen of Minneapolis, MN; a daughter, Mary Adler and her husband, Don of Des Moines, IA, daughter-in-law, Colleen Wade and her husband Richard of Wagner, SD; a son-in-law, Larry Dalton and his wife, Caron of Lake Park, IA; 13 grandchildren, Tricia Albertson, Becky Graves, Bill Dalton, Mindy Dalton, Cheryl Welle, Laura Cross, Mark Schenkelberg, Nick Schenkelberg, Kelli Petersen, Jessica Newman, Penelope Frohardt, Chelley Casey and Casey Borree; 21 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter Sandra Dalton; two sons, Scott and Robert; two granddaughters, Jaylene and Lisa Dalton; two stillborn grandchildren, Teresa and Larry Dalton Jr.; a brother, Art Snyder; a sister, Marian Miller; brothers-in-law, Paul, Bill, Marvin and Larry Schenkelberg; and a sister-in-law, Donna Snyder.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland or the American Diabetes Association.
