Obituary for Joanne F. Anthony (Holzman)

Le Mars, Iowa - Joanne F. Anthony, 93, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 1, 2020 at Good Samaritan Society in Le Mars. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 7, 2020 at All Saints Catholic Parish-St. Joseph Church in Le Mars. Social distancing and mask required. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. on Thursday, August 6 with a Catholic Daughter’s Rosary at 4 p.m. and a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7 p.m., all at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home, Le Mars. Visitation will also be one hour before service time at the church on Friday.

Joanne Frances Holzman was born on August 11, 1926 on the family farm near Le Mars, Iowa. She was the second oldest of 11 children born to Frank and Josephine (Kemp) Holzman. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Le Mars in 1944.

On September 16, 1947, Joanne and Leonard "Baldy" Anthony were united in marriage at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Le Mars.

Joanne was a homemaker and assisted in operating their business, Anthony's Mobile Milling. Leonard passed away on November 15, 2002. She lived at home until October of 2018 when she moved to the nursing home.
Joanne was an active member of All Saints Parish. She was a 50 year member of the Catholic Daughters and a long time member of the Christian Mothers. She attended daily Mass and enjoyed the time spent with the "Josephine's" coffee group following Mass. Joanne valued her faith, family and friends, especially her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She took many trips to Western Nebraska, Rapid City, and Lake Okoboji. In her spare time, Joanne played cards, enjoyed weekly family meals, and going on walks. She loved to cook and bake, especially desserts and breads. There was always a meal and cards when her siblings were in town visiting. She was known as "Grandma Jo" to many.

She will be lovingly remembered by her 3 children and their spouses, Randy and Donna Anthony of Des Moines, IA, Renee and Roger Staab of Rapid City, SD and Bev and Ken Langel of Le Mars, IA; 10 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren, Corey and Kristan (Joshua, Jared, Jaydon) Staab of Spring, TX, Emily and Nate (Kylan and Keagan) Gerlick of Rapid City, SD, Mike and Jennifer (Emerson, Everlee, and Estelle) Anthony of Clive, IA, Mark and Maegen (Madelynn, Maddox, and McGuire) Anthony of Ankeny, IA, Joe and Rachel (Emma and Ava) Langel of West Des Moines, IA, Megan Langel and fiancé Mike (Bryce and Michael) Grzelso of Marcus, IA, Tony and Jessica Staab of Brooklyn Park, MN, Kristen Langel of Le Mars, IA, Katie and BJ (Zaylee, Bentley, and Huxlee) Sitzmann of Le Mars, IA, and Chad Langel of Urbandale, IA; sisters, Edna Holzman of Omaha, NE, Betty and Roger Curry of Saratoga, CA, Elaine and Bill Pew of San Marcos, CA; brothers, Clayton and Lois Holzman of Le Mars, IA, Roger Holzman of Houston, TX and Leon and Nancy Holzman of Le Mars, IA; sisters-in-law, Marian Holzman of Alton, IA and Vonnie Anthony of Le Mars, IA; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leonard “Baldy”; brothers, Gordon Holzman, Stanley Holzman, Marv Holzman; sister, Marian Gotto and her husband, Irvin; mother and father-in-law, Eugene and Mary (Schleis) Anthony; brothers and sisters-in-law, Helen "Hun" and Cliff Langel, Eileen "Toots" and Vic Langel, Bernice and Mark Koopman, Albert "Babe" and Sylvia "Syb" Anthony, Donnie and Helen Anthony, and Elmer Anthony.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to All Saints Parish or Gehlen Catholic Schools.
