Obituary for Sue Carol Barnable (Dunn)

Sue Barnable, 88, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Monday, August 17, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Village in Le Mars. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, private family services will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars.

Sue Carol Barnable was born on October 31, 1931, in Cherokee, Iowa, the daughter of John James and Marvel (Boggess) Dunn. She was raised in the Le Mars, Iowa area, later in San Francisco, and upon her return in her junior year of high school, graduated from Le Mars Community High School in 1949. After graduation, she worked at Hollanders’ 5 & 10 in Le Mars.

On November 15, 1949, Sue and Harold J. Barnable were united in marriage at St. James’ Catholic Church in Le Mars. Their daughter, Patricia was born on December 6, 1951. Sue stayed at home with Patricia and eventually became involved in the LCHS junior and senior high school band activities and senior high Band Parents. In 1970, she took a position with the Le Mars Flower House as a sales person, eventually being promoted to assistant manager. During this time period at the Flower House, she was joined by her husband who worked as driver and head of maintenance. She stayed at the Flower House until 1984 when she began
work at Hotopp Jewelers. She retired from Hotopps in 1999, and became a full time caregiver to Harold until his death in 2005.

Sue was a life-long member of All Saints Catholic Parish, St. James Church in Le Mars. She enjoyed working on the annual church smorgasbord and occasional church circle activities.

Grateful to have shared her life is her daughter, Patricia S. Brown and her husband, Andrew P. Brown of Baltimore, MD; her sister, Kim Dunn Wright of Marana, AZ; nephew, Mike Barnable and his wife, Judy, and their sons, Jason and Jeff of Sioux Falls, SD; a nephew, Lanny Barnable of San Dimas, CA; and Sue’s Goddaughter, Elizabeth Orris Nilson of Hawarden, Iowa, and her mother, Melody of Le Mars.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold on July 24, 2005; brothers, Keith and Robert (Bob); sister-in-law, Frances Barnable, and two brothers-in-law. Emmet and Wayne Barnable.
