Obituary for Larry Lee Hamer

Larry L. Hamer, 74, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Friday, October 23, 2020 at Unity Point Health in Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Rev. Timothy Geitz will officiate. A private family burial with military honors will take place at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at Grace Lutheran Church. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Wednesday.

Larry Lee Hamer was born on June 25, 1946 in Manson, Iowa, the son of Howard and Mercedes (Thoma) Hamer. In 1955, he and his family moved to Minnesota where they farmed and ran a feed mill. He graduated from Stewartville (Minnesota) High School in 1964. He then attended Rochester Junior College. In September 1966, Larry enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served for 4 years prior to earning an Honorable Discharge on July 14, 1972.

On August 7, 1971, Larry and Linda Yeschick were united in marriage at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rochester, Minnesota. They made their home in Watertown, Minnesota and Fremont, Nebraska prior to moving to Le Mars, Iowa in 1978. Larry worked at Farmer’s Co-Op elevator in Hinton and Cappers Insurance. His last full time job was with First Financial in Dakota Dunes, South Dakota. He retired but soon after took a job with Le Mars Community Schools in the school lunch plan,where he enjoyed working with the children. He also delivered cars for Jensen Motors.

Larry was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church where he served as Elder and President of the congregation. He was always willing to help out whenever he could. He took it upon himself to make sure anyone coming to church felt welcome. When his boys were young, Larry was a Boy Scout Leader with Troop #188 and coached Little League Baseball. He was an avid golfer and loved to get on the course whenever he could. He was also an Iowa Hawkeyes, along with the Minnesota Vikings and Twins. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Grateful to have shared his life is his wife of 49 years, Linda Hamer of Le Mars, IA; a daughter and her husband, Kristin and Chris Mason of Arlington, TX, a son and his wife, Brian and Barbara Hamer of Sioux Falls, SD, a daughter, Shelly Ostermyer and her special friend, Carl Swanson of Le Mars, IA; and a son, Jason Hamer of Sioux City, IA. He was a proud grandpa to 13 grandchildren: Cooper, Connor, Caleb, Josie, Isabella, Nicholas, Dylan, Kaden, Logan, Lawson, Tylen, Kylie and Khloe. He is also survived by brothers, Roger Hamer of Salem, MO and Robert Hamer of Salem, MO; a sister, Roxann Neumann and her husband, Tom of Plainview, MN; and also many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Truman and Ruth Yeschick; a nephew, Jared Neumann; a sister-in-law, Ruth Hamer; and brothers-in-law, Randy Yeschick and his wife, Audrey and Mike Yeschick.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Grace Lutheran Church or to the family.
