Obituary for Roger LeRoy Updike
Roger L. Updike, 75, of Marcus, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, December 13, 2020, surrounded by his six children, at Floyd Valley Healthcare in Le Mars, Iowa. A Celebration of Life Service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus, Iowa. Masks and social distancing will be required. Rev. Kevin Roop will officiate. Burial will follow at the Marcus Amherst Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday at the church and will continue until the celebration service.
Roger LeRoy Updike was born on January 1, 1945 in Seattle, Washington to William and Erma Mae (Adams) Updike. He always told his family that 45 babies were born on the same day he was in Seattle.
On October 19, 1963 Roger married the love of his life, Glenda Jean Igou in Lakefield, Minnesota. They later settled in Marcus where they raised six kids.
Roger worked as a farmhand for Irv Deichmann when he moved to the Marcus farmhouse. He and his family moved into Marcus where he took a job with Marcus Lumber. He then went to work for K-Products, working first as a maintenance man then as the supervisor. When K-Products switched to American Identity, the company downsized and Roger went to work at Rosenboom Machine & Tool in Sheldon, Iowa. He later worked at CIVCO where he retired at the age of 72.
He will be lovingly remembered by his six kids; Dawn Updike (Steve) of Aurelia, IA, Roger (Brenda) Updike, Jr of Spencer, IA, Teresa Updike of Sioux City, IA, Michelle (Cliff) Nelson of Cherokee, IA, Sherry Vondraska of Spencer, IA and Ricki (Sarah) Updike of Sheldon, IA; sixteen grandchildren; Tiffany Updike (Roger) of Cherokee, IA , Tera Updike of Cherokee, IA, Kimberly Updike (John) of Royal, IA, Rebecca Updike (Rhys) of Hartley, IA, Jessica Updike (Angelo) of Sioux City, IA, Jeffery (Marissa) Updike of Remsen, IA, Tamecia Persons of Albert City, IA, Jasmin Nelson (Blake) of Carroll, IA, Kayla Bush (Aaron) of Aurelia, IA, Christopher (Cassie) Nelson of Meriden, IA, Colby (Emma) Nelson of Everly, IA, Dustin Miller of Marcus, IA, Samantha Miller (Jimmy) of Le Mars, IA, Andrew Miller of Sioux City, IA, Alexandria Donahue (Jordan) of Sheldon, IA, Justice Bernston of Sioux City, IA; brother; Bill (Linda) Updike of Lakefield, MN; sisters; Ann Adams of British Columbia, Canada, Janet Gubine of Fairmont, MN; in-laws; Sharon Sleik of Iron Mountain, MI, Gale Igou of Spencer, IA; 23 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews throughout the Midwest.
Roger was preceded in death by his wife, Glenda on October 24, 2004; his parents, William in 1983 and Erma Mae in 2010; granddaughter Kristina Updike in 1988; a great grandson Elijah Nehman in 2019; Glenn (Elva) Igou, Ronnie Igou, Joyce (Bernard) Bond, Dean Sleik, Sandra Igou; son-in-law, Doug Vondraska.
