Obituary for Ruby Lillian Schlesser (Adank)

Ruby L. Schlesser, 83, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at the Good Samaritan Society in Le Mars. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 21, 2021 at All Saints Catholic Parish - St. James Church in Le Mars. Father Bruce Lawler will celebrate Mass. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Alton, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 20, 2021 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 4-7 p.m. with a Rosary at 5:00 p.m. and a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will resume at 10:00 a.m. on Friday at St. James Church.

Ruby Lillian Schlesser was born on September 13, 1937 in Arcadia, Wisconsin, the daughter of David and Alvina (Killian) Adank. She was raised in the Arcadia area where she graduated from High School. Following school, Ruby ventured to Le Mars, Iowa with school friends and worked in Le Mars. It is here where she met her future husband, Robert Schlesser.

On January 5, 1957, Ruby and Robert Schlesser were united in marriage. They started out farming in the Maurice, Iowa area. They purchased a farm near Le Mars, Iowa in 1972 and then moved to Robert’s home place near Maurice Iowa in 1991 where they eventually retired. In 2020 they moved into Le Mars, Iowa.

Along with taking care of their home and raising children, Ruby worked at Archies’ Waeside Restaurant as a cook, in the laundry department at the Brentwood Nursing Home, Research and Development at Harker’s Meats and cooked at the Floyd Valley Hospital. She was a member of All Saints Catholic Parish – St. James Church in Le Mars and served for many years on the Altar Society. In her spare time, Ruby enjoyed reading books. She also enjoyed gardening and canning. Ruby was well known for her baking, cooking and her fried chicken.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 64 years, Robert Schlesser of Le Mars, IA; her children, Mark (Shelly) Schlesser of Le Mars, IA, Donna (Larry) Huss of Yankton, SD, Randy Schlesser of Le Mars, IA, Bob (Lori) Schlesser of Le Mars, IA and Jerry (Terri) Schlesser of Dutton, MT; a son-in-law, Chuck Johnson of Le Mars, IA. 18 grandchildren, Matthew (Katelyn), Craig and Aaron (Kelsey) Schlesser, Jamie Huss (Sydney), Dani Marcial (Alberto), Lacey Oehlerking (James), Kyle (Jackie), Chad (Kelsey), Joshua (Jessica) and Scott (Kelsey) Schlesser, Melanie Greenstein (Michael), Megan Johnson-Gott(Isaac), Emilie Montag (Jared), Jeri Lyn Lawrenceson (Bill), Jason Schlesser, Brooke Kugler (Logan), Chris Schlesser (Nikki), Suzanne Schlesser (Shawn); 22 great-grandchildren; brothers, Lonnie (Charlene) Adank of Cochrane, WI and Dale (Pat) Adank of Sterling Heights, MI; sisters, Ruth (Stanley) Swenson of Buffalo City, WI. and Debra (Steve) Knutson of Alma, WI; sisters-in-law, Delores Arens of Le Mars, IA, Carmen O’Brien of Jacksonville, FL, Teckla Adank of Waumandee, WI, Sue Adank of Tallahassee, FL and MaryAnn Adank of Milwaukee, WI and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Susan Johnson; brothers, Jerome, Lyle and Gordon Adank; and sisters-in-law, Darlene Barkowski and Phyllis O’Neill.
