Obituary for Bonnie June Irwin (Woodall)

Bonnie J. Irwin, 93, of Marcus, Iowa, passed away on Monday, July 26, 2021, at the Heartland Care Center in Marcus, Iowa. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2021, at Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus, Iowa. Rev. Dr. Travis Stevick will officiate. Burial will follow at Marcus Amherst Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 30, 2021, at Grace United Methodist Church. The family will be present from 5-8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Saturday.

Bonnie June Woodall was born on June 7, 1928 in Cherokee, Iowa to Thomas and Ida (Johnson) Woodall. She lived in Tilden Township until her marriage, first on a farm and later helping her parents run the Fielding Store. Bonnie attended Fielding Country School and then went to high school at Grand Meadow, graduating in 1945.

Bonnie and Cecil J. Irwin were married in July 1947 at the Mt. Pleasant Church in rural Marcus. The couple had a trucking business before starting to farm in the Grand Meadow area. In 1961, they moved to their home near Marcus and lived there until Cecil’s death. Bonnie then moved to town. She had resided at the Heartland Care Center for the past 7 years.

She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, UMW, circle, birthday and neighborhood clubs. Bonnie served on several church committees and sang in the choir. She worked as a seamstress at Willow Hill Bridal Shop for 9 years and did seamstress work out of her home for many years. Bonnie and Cecil loved to dance to the Big Band music and they enjoyed golfing and traveling together. She was a huge fan of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s sports and activities, seldom missing an event.

Bonnie will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Julia (Charles) Sand, of Marcus, IA; her sons, Wyman (Angie) Irwin of Tampa, FL and Martin (Kris) Irwin of Marcus, IA; her grandchildren, Stephanie (Denny) Spieler, Matthew Simons, Tony Simons (special friend Leah Dunn), Nicole (Andy) Busch, Donovan (Wendy) Irwin, Thomas (Jennifer) Irwin, William (Beth) Irwin, Billie (Ryan) George, Katie (Adam) Hall and Kelli Irwin; 19 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Maxine Irwin of Washta, IA; brother-in-law, Dean Petersen of Cleghorn, IA; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Cecil; grandson, Derek Irwin; great-granddaughter, Brittany Irwin; sisters, Louise (Wesley) Hirschman, Dorothy (Roy) Meister, Mary (George) Rutter; son-in-law, Charles Simons; brother-in-law, Kenneth Irwin; sister-in-law, Beverly Petersen.
