Obituary for Charlie Otto Schrunk

Charlie O. Schrunk, 87, of Le Mars, Iowa, formerly of Mapleton and Danbury, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at Accura Health in Le Mars. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 22, 2022, at All Saints Catholic Parish – St. Joseph Church in Le Mars. Father Bruce Lawler will celebrate Mass. Burial with military honors will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at the church.

Charlie Otto Schrunk was born on June 3, 1934, on the family farm near Danbury, Iowa, one of nine children born to Otto and Frances (Sohm) Schrunk. He attended Danbury Catholic and later graduated from Danbury High School. He worked as a truck driver, at a farm implement and with area farmers prior to enlisting in the United States Army. Charlie served overseas in Germany from March 20, 1957 to March 14, 1959, when he earned his Honorable Discharge. He returned and began farming with his father.

On June 1, 1960, Genevieve Raasch and Charlie Otto Schrunk were united in marriage in Sioux City, Iowa. They made their home on a farm near Danbury. Charlie and Genevieve farmed and raised their family together until retiring in the fall of 1995. Even though he retired, Charlie helped area farmers, worked at a local lumberyard and built and refinished furniture.

Charlie and Genevieve moved to Le Mars, Iowa in 2008 and became members of All Saints Catholic Parish. Charlie continued refinishing furniture, woodworking and took great pride in his yardwork. He rarely missed a morning with his coffee group.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children and their spouses, James and Leyla Schrunk, Don and Karri Schrunk, Nancy and Jerry Giese and Marsha and Don Luksan all of Le Mars, IA and Laura and James Drogosz of Addison, IL; grandchildren, Sara (Tony) McKinney, Ben (Heather) Bogenrief, Joel (Laura) Bogenrief, Elizabeth Sheldon, Wendy Schrunk, Jessica (Travis) Simmons, Bret (Christine) Giese, Rebecca (Josh) Rolling, Aimee Luksan, Sabrina Van Horn, Molly Drogosz and Andrew Drogosz; great-grandchildren, Abbie Chinn, Steven Chinn, Allision Chinn, Serena Bogenrief, Jordan Bogenrief, Jet Bogenrief, Andy Prescott, Noah Prescott, Grant Prescott, Ava Prescott, John Sheldon, Dustin Rolling, Archer Rolling and Dominic Hendrickson; a sister, Odelia Schrunk of Clinton, IA; brothers, LeRoy (Sally) Schrunk of Le Mars, IA, Ace (Mary) Schrunk of Missouri Valley, IA, Otto Schrunk of Sioux City, IA and Byron (Patti) Schrunk of Tijeras, NM; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Genevieve on January 22, 2021; great-grandson, Elliott Bogenrief; a sister, Barbara Ann Schrunk; brothers, John and Bruce Schrunk; and a sister-in-law, Kathy Schrunk.
