Obituary for Duane Eldon Winterfeld

Duane E. Winterfeld, 81, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at his home in Le Mars. A family graveside service will take place at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Le Mars with military honors conducted by Heeren – McHale – Wilkens American Legion Post #724 of Brunsville, Iowa. Rev. Dr. Michel Okitakoyi Lundula of the United Methodist Church of Le Mars will officiate.

Duane Eldon Winterfeld was born on August 5, 1940, in Sioux Center, Iowa, the son of Theodore and Edna (Rehder) Winterfeld. He was raised in Sioux Center and graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1957. Following graduation, Duane assisted his parents on the family farm.

On September 4, 1962, Duane and Marlene Heeren were united in marriage at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. They made their home on Duane’s family farm west of Sioux Center. Farming was in Duane’s blood and he loved raising his son, Randy there and farming with his family. Duane served with the Iowa Army National Guard, 2nd Battalion, 133rd Infantry in Le Mars. He was called into active service on May 13, 1968. He served as a Sergeant during the Vietnam War until earning his Honorable Discharge.

After 42 years of farming, Duane and Marlene moved to Le Mars in 2013. After moving to Le Mars, Duane changed careers and drove a semi for area trucking firms. Upon retiring from driving truck, he enjoyed helping at the Dairy Queen, his co -workers and meeting new people. Duane was an avid reader and followed world and military history as well as current events. He loved spending time with his grandsons and attending their activities. His participation at the United Methodist Church of Le Mars was important to his faith. He sang in the choir and enjoyed interacting with many church members.

He will be lovingly remembered by a son and his wife, Randy James and Mindy Winterfeld of Hull, IA; three grandchildren, Mitchell James, Ashten James and Keagen James all of Hull, IA a sister, Marlene Wegner of Slayton, MN; a brother and his wife, Merlyn and Doris Winterfeld of Ogden, IA; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Winterfeld of Sioux City, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marlene on May 1, 2019; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Clara and Herman Heeren; and brothers, Julius and his wife, Joann, Edwin and Carroll and his wife, Betty; a brother-in-law, Larue Wegner.
