Obituary for Susan Hoffman (Severson)
Le Mars, Iowa – Susan Hoffman, 70, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2022, in Austin, Texas following a long illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 :00 a.m. on Friday, August 19, 2022, at All Saints Catholic Parish-St. Joseph Church in Le Mars. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, August 19, 2022, at the church.
Susan was born in Le Mars to Ronald and Joan (Smith) Severson on June 5, 1952. The eldest of three children, Susan was a graduate of Le Mars Community School and Westmar College. During college, Susan studied in Graz, Austria, an experience which gave her a lifelong appreciation of the German language.
On June 28, 1975, she married Thomas Hoffman, and together they had four children - Audra, Jon, Rosalee, and Dana. Dana passed away in infancy in 1986.
For many years, Susan served as a substitute German teacher for the Le Mars Community School District. She later owned a Curves franchise in Council Bluffs, IA. Susan loved volunteering with various community organizations; the Plymouth County Historical Museum was a favorite. Additionally, she enjoyed many hobbies and leisure pursuits, including reading, fitness, and gardening.
In recent years, Susan enjoyed spending winters with her husband in San Diego, CA. Through frequent walks on the beach, she familiarized herself with the local flora and fauna, which she loved to describe to her children. In 2018, she was delighted to visit Austria again, this time with her husband.
Susan was a devout Christian and a dedicated wife, mother, and daughter. Her family was her life; she provided them with endless love and support. She will be lovingly remembered for her kindness, generosity, gentleness, sense of humor, ambivalence towards cooking, and love of nature and literature.
Grateful to have shared her life are her husband, Thomas Hoffman, of Le Mars, daughter, Audra (Geoff) Grubb, of Austin, TX, son, Jon Hoffman, of San Diego, CA, daughter, Rosalee Hoffman, of Takoma Park, MD, and brother, Greg (Deb) Severson, of Omaha, NE. In addition to her parents, Ronald and Joan Severson, Susan was preceded in death by a son, Dana Hoffman, and a sister, Ann Severson.
