Obituary for Danny Eugene Vermilyea

Danny Eugene Vermilyea, 75, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, October 20, 2022, at Accura Healthcare in Le Mars. A Celebration of Life Service will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at the Merrill First United Methodist Church. Rev. Jon Millen will officiate. Visitation with the family present will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the church.

Danny Eugene Vermilyea was born on September 2, 1947, in Sioux City, Iowa to Ray and Fern (Neal) Vermilyea. Danny attended grade school in Climbing Hill, Iowa until the family moved to Merrill, Iowa. Danny graduated from Le Mars Community High School. After high school he was drafted into the United States Army. He was stationed in California and Texas and served in Vietnam. After receiving his Honorable Discharge, Danny lived in California for several years before settling in Merrill.

On December 31, 1975, Danny and Karen Dee Simmons were married in Elk Point, South Dakota. They were blessed with three children, Tony, Ryan and Shay. They were later divorced but continued to make memories together with their children and grandchildren. Danny worked at Wells Dairy for many years prior to his retirement.

Danny was a member of the Merrill First United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion in Le Mars. Danny was a member of Triangle Masonic Lodge in Leeds for many years. He participated in the Abu Bekr Wrecking Crew and the White Horse Patrol. He enjoyed driving the little firetruck in parades and helping out at the circus with his grandchildren. Danny was also 32nd degree Mason in the Sioux City Scottish Rite.

He was a caring person that took pride in helping others. Danny touched so many lives. Spending time with his family took top priority. He enjoyed the outdoors and camping. He watched cowboy and cop shows with his grandchildren and loved horses. He was known as a “smooth” dancer. Danny was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan and enjoyed a relaxing Sunday watching football.

Grateful to have shared his life are his children, Tony Vermilyea and his wife, Marife of Sioux City, IA, Ryan Vermilyea and Shay Gant and her husband, Patrick of Le Mars, IA; grandchildren, Jade, Mackenzie, Stone, Mila, Poppy, Toby (Ashley), Brady, KC, Danny, Cutler and Jackson; great-grandchildren, Elijah, Jayloni and Greta; brothers, Gaylen Vermilyea and his wife, Janice of Omaha, NE and Terry Vermilyea and his wife, Lorraine of Chino Valley, AZ; several nieces and nephews and many others that called him friend, Dad, Grandpa and Papa Dan whom he considered family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Lance Hitchcock; a sister Sharon Lawrence; a brother, Mark Vermilyea; and a sister-in-law, Candy Vermilyea.
