Obituary for Bonnie Jean Westergard
Le Mars, Iowa – Bonnie J. Westergard, 95, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2022, at the Good Samaritan Society in Le Mars. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 28, 2022, at All Saints Catholic Parish-St. James Church in Le Mars. Father Bruce Lawler will celebrate Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will be one hour before the Mass at the church.
Bonnie was born on March 8, 1927, in Le Mars, Iowa to Frank and Trudy (McGraw) Luken. She was the second youngest of five. On July 18, 1949, Bonnie married her high school sweetheart, Richard J. Westergard at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. They lived the majority of their life in Le Mars where they raised their four children, Julie, Mike, Pat and Lisa.
Bonnie was the secretary at the Le Mars Chamber of Commerce. One of her proudest accomplishments was starting the Le Mars Chamber coffees which continue to this day. She moved on to be a secretary at Plymouth Electric Co-op REC from where she retired in 1994.
Bonnie was an avid golfer and spent hours perfecting her game and enjoying time with her friends. Her other great joy was estate sales and she had a keen eye for antique furniture and collectables. She took great pride in refinishing the furniture she bought. Bonnie loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was fondly known as Grandma Tea Party. The front porch was her domain and she spent countless hours on the porch swing talking with them and her neighbors.
Bonnie is survived by her children, Julie (Allan) Gourlie of Edmonds, WA, daughter-in-law, Kim Westergard of Le Mars, IA, Patrick (Jody) Westergard of Brier, WA and Lisa Foreman of Sioux City, IA; 12 grandchildren, Joseph Ideker, Joshua Ideker, Adam Ideker, Katie Gochev, Daniel Westergard, Megan Miller, Drew Gourlie, David Westergard, Nicholas Westergard, Alex Westergard, Alissa Foreman and Abbey Foreman; fourteen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband Richard Westergard; son, Michael Westergard; parents; sisters, Shirley West and Kitty Rolfes; brothers, Lowell and Paul Luken.
