Obituary for Deloris Mable Bohlken (Herman)

Deloris M. Bohlken, 91, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Village in Le Mars. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 12, 2023, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Rev. Christian Meier will officiate. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Deloris Mable Bohlken was born on July 13, 1931, on a farm west of Merrill, Iowa, the daughter of Harvey and Mable (Gabel) Herman. She was raised near Merrill and later graduated from Le Mars High School.

On December 1, 1953, Deloris and Donald Bohlken were united in marriage at the Adaville United Methodist Church. They moved to Le Mars where they started their family. Along with caring for her four boys, Deloris worked at Le Mars Community Schools for the lunch program and provided child care in family’s homes.

Deloris was a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. She was an avid basketball fan and enjoyed watching games with her family. She also crocheted many afghans and wall hangings, gardened and baked wedding cakes. She and her siblings also enjoyed attending the Le Mars Community Theater.

She will be lovingly remembered by her four sons and their wives, Dean and Leann, Dan and Leigh Anne, David and Heidi all of Le Mars, IA and Darin of Marquette, MI; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Shirley Baker of Wagner, SD and Gladys Mroczkowski of Le Mars, IA; two brothers, Milford (Sharon) Herman of Le Mars, IA and Don (Gloria) Herman of Urbandale, IA, brother In-law, Virgil Willer of Akron, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald on May 12, 2007; an infant brother, Lelan; brothers, Milton (Liz), Willard (Estella), Gerald and Duane (Nancy) Herman; sisters, Eva (Harry) Varenhorst, Marjorie Willer, and brothers in-law, Bob Mroczkowski, Verlyn Baker and LaVerle “Whitey” Bohlken.
