Obituary for Marlys Joan Frerichs (DeJong)

Marlys J. Frerichs, 89, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at her home. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Rev. Christian Meier will officiate. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 27, 2023, at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Saturday.

Marlys J. Frerichs was born on November 21, 1933, on the family farm northeast of Orange City, Iowa, the daughter of Nelson and Ada (Schuller) DeJong. Growing up, she attended Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City. She made her confession of faith at the age of 16. She sang in the choir and participated in the Christian Endeavor Youth Group. Marlys attended rural school for six years before attending Newkirk Consolidated School. She participated in various music groups, cheerleading and was a class officer, graduating in 1951.

After graduation, Marlys took a position with the Sioux County Assessor’s Office. She worked there for 12 years. On June 2, 1960, Marlys and Stanley Frerichs were united in marriage at Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City, Iowa. They made their home in Le Mars, Iowa. Along with raising her four boys, Marlys cleaned houses and did babysitting.

Marlys was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. and was very active in it. Throughout the years, she taught Sunday School, Youth Choir, Vacation Bible School and sang in many music groups including the Singspiration Six.

In her free time, Marlys enjoyed playing cards with her friends, spending time with her grandchildren and watching games with her sons and their favorite teams, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Marlys is survived by her sons, Mike of Texas, Jeff and Greg both of Le Mars, IA and Curt and his fiancé, Lynn Kavanaugh of Sioux City, IA; a daughter, Betty Steenblock and her husband Boyd of Orange City, IA; five grandchildren, Christopher and his wife Christine, Sarah and her fiancé Michael, Emi and their partner Ruth, Jordan and Samuel; two great-grandchildren, Delaney and Margaret; two sisters, Lorraine Krommendyk of Orange City, IA and Carolyn Scheider of Austin, TX; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Donna Frerichs of Le Mars, IA, Carol Rowe of Lake Park, IA, Ardyth Fisher and her husband, Bernard of Helena, MT; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Stanley on August 20, 2005; in-laws, Claus and Minnie Frerichs; sisters-in law and brothers-in-law, Leonard Krommendyk, Max Scheider, Richard Frerichs, Gerald Frerichs, George and Kathy Frerichs, Leon and Peggy Frerichs, Ron Fick, Charles Rowe two nieces, Rhonda Krommendyk and Lyn TeVelde; and four nephews, Paul Krommendyk, Richard A. Frerichs, Tom Frerichs and Gary Frerichs.
