Obituary for Dennis Dean Hargens

Dennis D. Hargens, 68, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, May 4, 2023, at his home in Le Mars. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 8, 2023, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Rev. Christian Meier will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 7, 2023, at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 4-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the service on Monday.

Dennis Dean Hargens was born on May 22, 1954, in Manning, Iowa, the son of Virtus and Lois (Joens)
Hargens. He attended Le Mars Community Schools, graduating in 1972. Following high school, Denny took
his first job with V & H Tire. On May 24, 1975, Denny and Kathleen Borchers were united in marriage at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Denny then went to work at Supersweet Feeds. In 1979, he began a
longtime career with the City of Le Mars in the Street Department. He was promoted to supervisor in 1984.
Denny transferred to the Parks Department in 1998 due to his health and retired in 2004.

Denny was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. He served on the Le Mars Volunteer Fire
Department from July 1, 1975, to January 15, 1997. As a fireman, Denny loved participating in water fight
competitions and the annual firemen’s convention. In his spare time, he enjoyed bowling, fishing, camping, his yardwork, and fixing things. He and his family spent time at their lake cabin on Little Spirit Lake. High on his priority list was following his grandchildren’s activities. Others will remember Denny putting their needs before his. He was always willing to help when needed.

Grateful to have shared his life is his wife of 47 years, Kathy Hargens; his children, Jason (Kristin) Hargens,
Kristina Hargens, Michael (Stephanie) Hargens, and Shari Hargens; grandchildren, Leah Volkert, Brett Volkert,
Jacob Hargens, Ethan Hargens, Carter Hargens, Chase Hammons, Kaden Hargens, and Conner Hargens, all of
Le Mars, IA; his mother, Lois Hargens of Le Mars, IA; sisters, Linda (Darwin) Huls of Le Mars, IA and Janice
(Lon) Sitzmann of Kingsley, IA; brothers, Larry (Tami) Hargens of Omaha, NE and Darrell (Kim) Hargens of
Le Mars, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Virtus Hargens; a grandson, Kaleb Hargens; an infant sister, Diane; and
brothers, James and Ronnie.
