Le Mars, Iowa – Frieda M. Onken, 92, of Le Mars, formerly of the Craig, Iowa area, passed away on Tuesday, September 19, 2006 at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars. Funeral services will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 22, 2006 at Christ Lutheran Church (Grant Township) rural Le Mars, Iowa. Rev. Dan Gerrietts will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 21 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home. The family will be present from 6-8 p.m. with a prayer service scheduled for 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral.
Frieda Meta Amanda Onken was born on December 13, 1913 near Akron, Iowa to Johannes and Clara (Mangelsen) Kluver. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church (Preston Township) near Akron. Frieda attended country school near her home.
On December 18, 1934 Frieda and Onno B. Onken Jr. were united in marriage at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church (Preston Township) near Akron. The couple made their home on a farm two miles south of Craig, Iowa. They farmed near Craig until retiring in 1976. Frieda and Onnie moved to Le Mars for their retirement years. Onnie passed away on April 12, 1979. In January 2000 Frieda moved to the Abbey of Le Mars.
Frieda has been a member of Christ Lutheran Church (Grant Township) rural Le Mars since her marriage to Onnie in 1934. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, crossword puzzles and playing cards.
Frieda will be lovingly remembered by her 26 nieces and nephews; as well as numerous great- nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Onno; seven brothers Henry, Christ, Hans, Charlie, John, William, and Alvin; three nieces and seven nephews.
