Obituary

Virginia Mae Schenkelberg was born on June 10, 1920 in Carroll County, Iowa, the daughter of Warren John and Stella Ordell (Snyder). She was raised and attended school in Glidden, Iowa. Following graduation, she furthered her education at the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, Iowa.

On September 6, 1942, Virginia and Al Schenkelberg were united in marriage in Carmel, California. The wedding took place just prior to Al departing overseas during WWII. Following the war, the couple settled down in Carroll, Iowa before moving to Le Mars, Iowa in 1959 where Al took over the John Deere Dealership.

Virginia Mae Schenkelberg, 99, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Saturday, May 16, 2020 at her home. A visitation with social distancing will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at All Saints Catholic Parish, St. Joseph Church in Le Mars followed by a private family Mass at 10:30 a.m. Father Matthew Solyntjes will celebrate Mass. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars.

Virginia was a member of All Saints Catholic Parish in Le Mars and was active in Catholic Daughters. She was an avid card player, enjoyed golfing and camping with her family. She and Al wintered in Arizona with friends from Le Mars. Virginia enjoyed her time with her family, visiting them in various states throughout the country. Her grandchildren grew up enjoying grandma’s fresh cinnamon rolls and a friendly game of garbage.

She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Allan Schenkelberg and his wife, Karen of Minneapolis, MN; a daughter, Mary Adler and her husband, Don of Des Moines, IA, daughter-in-law, Colleen Wade and her husband Richard of Wagner, SD; a son-in-law, Larry Dalton and his wife, Caron of Lake Park, IA; 13 grandchildren, Tricia Albertson, Becky Graves, Bill Dalton, Mindy Dalton, Cheryl Welle, Laura Cross, Mark Schenkelberg, Nick Schenkelberg, Kelli Petersen, Jessica Newman, Penelope Frohardt, Chelley Casey and Casey Borree; 21 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter Sandra Dalton; two sons, Scott and Robert; two granddaughters, Jaylene and Lisa Dalton; two stillborn grandchildren, Teresa and Larry Dalton Jr.; a brother, Art Snyder; a sister, Marian Miller; brothers-in-law, Paul, Bill, Marvin and Larry Schenkelberg; and a sister-in-law, Donna Snyder.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland or the American Diabetes Association.

Al and Karen. Was so sorry to hear about your Mom. My love and sympathy go to both of you and the family. I will always remember her as such a wonderful lady. A good friend to my Mom and so many others. She was kind and generous to all with a wonderful attitude for living her life. A roll model for the ages.
Though I could not be there with you it was so nice to be there virtually for the funeral. A very nice service.
Love and prayers.

o: Mary and all of Ginny's family. My memories go back so far to coming to Carroll to visit family, always included a stop at Al and Ginny's on the way home from Uncle Jerry and Sally's, Sandy and I were the same age so we always had lots to do together, either playing in the basement or on our bikes and riding around and all over the town to different parks to play. We watched Elvis the first time together on their tv. Al and Ginny always held a special place in my heart and I always thought of them as aunt and uncle. When I came through to visit, first with my daughter and granddaughter and then again with my sister Loriann, we had such great visits and couldn't leave until she went with us to Blue Bunny's to get ice cream. I can't help but smile every time I go by their ice cream in the grocery store. Please know that Ginny has left a special imprint on many hearts and will be sorely missed. My prayers go out to all of you.
